Boring Geeky Music Stuff

I just discovered that the utility I’ve been using to rip mp3s has NOT been ripping using the LAME alt preset fast extreme setting it was supposed to be using, but was instead producing something closer to the alt preset fast standard setting. A quick upgrade fixed the problem, and the difference isn’t noticeable unless one dons (good) headphones anyway (like the Beyerdynamic DT 250), but still… I’m anal and hate to discover little things like this.

  • Hey Ginger!

It wasn’t so long ago that I was ripping everything with MusicMatch’s Fraunhofer fastenc encoder (using cbr), and those mp3s sound positively awful now that I have some idea what I’m doing. I will probably go back and rerip some of the stuff I listen to more often from that group for sure. These LAME encoded mp3s that I screwed up really aren’t that bad, so I probably won’t go back anytime soon and redo them. And I’m not as picky as some people are on this (I’ll trade some quality for slightly more speed).

Does Michael use EAC to create his wavs, then batch encode? I draw the line at that two-step process, even though I fully realize it’s the "best" way to do it. 🙂

  • So are you planning to rerip everything? Michael talks about reripping all his MP3s every now and then to take advantage of better encoding technology.
