Buffalo Bayou
Count this as another of those journal entries that's half a day late because I was just too worn out to write coherently when I finally got in last night. But I have a good excuse. I blew out of work at my usual time, and just couldn't bear to go to the gym for the usual workout. It was much too beautiful outside -- probably the prettiest day we've had yet this spring (which has been cold and miserable by Houston standards). So I got home as quickly as possible (which isn't that quickly, given the state of the roads in Lee Brown's America), loaded up my daypack to have some weight, and took off with Kiwi towards Buffalo Bayou park, which has trails that run all the way downtown. I figured I would get in some hiking in preparation for the next backpacking trip (I'm in a backpacking frame of mind right now), Kiwi would get a good walk, and I would see a part of town that I've never really seen outside of various festivals that are held there. Aside from needing a lot more weight in the daypack to approximate a backpacking trip a little more closely, it was wonderful!
Then it was off to drinks and dinner with Kellas and Hallmark. Floyd's was packed, so we tried out Hofbrau Steakhouse. The place looks like a dive bar, only a hunter's version -- lots of dead animals on the walls -- but really more of a Montrose/Heights hunter's version (some of the dead animals had xmas lights decorating their antlers! xmas lights are a major decorative item in Montrose). All of that being said, that was the best damn steak I've had in this city -- and inexpensive, eclectic, uncrowded, and in the neighborhood to boot. So there's proof for you that if you just poke around this weird city a little bit, you can avoid unpleasant experiences like waiting for half an hour or longer at Ruth's Chris for the pleasure of letting them serve you an overrated and overpriced hunk o' beef.
