Whirlwind Weekend

well they wanna see us stumble
wanna see us hit the ground
and once we're in the dirt
they wanna drag us further down
till we're just like them;
beatin' down the younger ones

that ain't no way to live
baby I feel it I swear
well I don't know where I'm headed
but I'll know when I get there

-- Mary Cutrufello, "Tonight's the Night"
from When the Night is Through

This weekend has been a whirlwind. Saturday was especially hectic. In addition to finishing up the redesign of the backpacking pages on Saturday, I worked on some other writing, purchased a Magellan GPS system (it rocks!), hiked down to Buffalo Bayou, and concluded with friends at Rudyard's for beers (and later Slobberbone, whose sound has grown on me for some reason). The Rudyard's session was fun, because Hallmark arrived with Kellas in tow, and we got caught up on the goings on since he was over a few weeks ago (what a lovely treat). Our new friend Julie eventually showed, and of course John and Cathy were part of the mix from the start. It was a little odd in that I got so involved in various conversations that I was unable to do my usual people-watching. Callie suggests I missed some interesting goings on, but that being the case, it's hard to comment on them!

Today has been much less productive unfortunately. Some recent entries and emails from the author over at Franks and Beans have gotten the old brain churning. It's always refreshing to run across such thoughtful people. Which reminds me -- I'm curious what people think of Jaffo's (deliberately) provocative "People I'm Tired Of" entry. I always enjoy Michael's stuff because he forces his readers to think. My reaction to that piece was/is: Does Objectivism require the level of heroism he suggests? I'm inclined to think not -- but then again, I'm not sure what he means by Objectivism. The Peikoff variety? The Kelley variety? The knee-jerk "Ayn was right about everything" variety (or is that Peikoff's)? My own sort of post-Objectivist variant?
