The Boxy ’08 Liberty

I’m starting to see a few of the ’08 Jeep Libertys out on the road.

Does anyone like the boxy/hard-edged redesign?

I much prefer the older, curvy design. Not everything needs to look like a Hummer.

  • No. I spoke with a guy who restores cars, and he had several Jeeps where the owners had asked him to restore them.

He said that the Jeep, for some unexplained reason, had a resurgence of interest, and demand had forced prices to spike.

  • The "boxy" redesign was Jeep saying that they screwed the pooch by moth-balling the old "square body" Cherokee and replacing it with the Liberty.

The new Liberty looks strikingly similar to the old Cherokee to me.

    Except that its all plastic.

    I miss my old Cherokee.

  • Yeah, they did seem to reach back for the Cherokee look, didn’t they?

It’s funny — Liberty succeeds Cherokee and updated curvy look. Then Liberty 2 succeeds curvy Liberty with Cherokee look.

What was old is new again. 🙂

  • I miss the old XJ Cherokee (1984-2000), and kinda like the new re-style. A friend’s 1996 Cherokee had good power and fuel economy with the 4 liter inline six and was comfortable, if a little cramped. Nothing like riding in the back seat with four dead deer in the way-back, and their sharp little hooves poking your back for 200+ miles.

  • I hadn’t paid much attention to these cars, but I like the older curvy look too. I like curvy cars. I like curvy on just about everything, come to think of it. 😉

  • I loved my old Jeep Liberty (the curvy one) and I have to say that I’m not feeling the new incarnation. But I agree with Cory — Jeep is finally admitting in a sense that they shouldn’t have scrapped the Cherokee.
