Big 12 Wrap: Week 13

A limited Week 13 of action in the Big 12 had only one real surprise, but it was a biggie. Off to the games:

Oklahoma 27, Oklahoma State 21
Oklahoma completes an improbable run to eke out a Big 12 South championship, and against a pesky OSU team that always gives them trouble. Go ahead and give Bob Stoops that Big 12 coach of the year trophy.

Texas A&M 12, Texas 7
Coach Fran saves his job, as the Longhorns’ late-season tailspin ends their Big 12 Championship hopes.

Nebraska 37, Colorado 14
Nebraska gets a nice tuneup before what could be one of the most competitive Big 12 title games in years.

Missouri 42, Kansas 17
Missou ends a three-game losing streak that put a damper on the season after a strong start.

  • I went to the Texas/A&M game and wasn’t that surprised at the result. In fact, I was somewhat reluctant to go because I felt there was a 50/50 chance I’d see the Horns’ season go up in flames.

Most of my UT family was actually rooting for OU because we weren’t optomistic about a UT/Nebraska matchup.

    Sigh.

To state the painfully obvious, the team that wanted it the most, won. Good job Aggies.

  • You could see the wind go out of the UT sails after the failed 4th down try early.

McCoy’s arm turned to mush late in the game.

nice win for Fran, lets see how they do next year without the Jell-O out of conference schedule.

  • I really do not understand the late-season fade from Texas.

Colt McCoy is going to be a very good quarterback, but it’s shocking to me that Texas was not able to run the ball more physically as the season went on. That big offensive line should have been able to take the load off McCoy. Instead, this Texas team seemed to get softer as the season went on. I don’t understand that.

I had figured it to be a one or two loss team. In fact, I was making fun of y’all for picking them so high in the preseason.;) They did the opposite of most Mack Brown teams: they got worse as the season wore on. You’re absolutely right, though, that senior-laden line should have been rolling over people, especially the likes of K-State. Oh well. Next year.

Here’s to the Sooners. Give’em hell in Kansas City.

  • Our impression is that the team really wasn’t that good. If we’d been told at the beginning of the season that we’d go 9-3, we probably would have been okay with that. Even in the earlier games (against Baylor for instance) they won, but they didn’t impress. We were hoping that the cards wouldn’t fall in favor of an OSU/Texas rematch cause we just didn’t think we had a champion-calibur team.

It’s nonetheless disappointing how the team ended up at 9-3 with the last two losses and one of them being to A&M. Colt out of one game and "off" for the other, so that gives us hope for next season.

Yeah, this team was overrated from the beginning of the season. Colt McCoy was certainly a pleasant surprise, and once it became clear he was going to be really good, I tended to forget my early-season pessimism.

K-State and A&M brought me back to earth.

  • I still don’t see how that good offensive line didn’t simply take control of games later in the season, much as Oklahoma’s offensive line just got better as the season went on and they were able to rely on their running game (and less on Paul Thompson) and defense.

It’s almost as if McCoy turned out to be better than everyone thought he would be, they decided they could just ride him to the Big 12 title, and then discovered that’s a lot to ask of any player not named Vince Young, especially a freshman.

I’m still really surprised that this turned out to be a three-loss team.

  • With McCoy being so good, it was only an if (not when) Snead would transfer. It’ll be interesting to see if he decides D1 or D2.

  • Interesting choice of words in Snead’s non-denial denial last night:

    Asked Wednesday night if he

Interesting that the Startlegram had the story; the scuttlebutt around here has TCU being the odds-on favorite at this point.
