Nothing Like A Little Fecal Matter In Your Ocean

When I first moved to Houston, I initially thought the Galveston beaches were kind of charming.

And then I started paying attention to the news, and realized that this happened with distressing regularity:

Galveston bacteriaThe first thing you need to know is that none of the beaches on Galveston Island is closed. Experts say there is certainly no reason for anyone to panic. But there are ‘no swimming’ advisories in place for three beaches.Galveston County health district officials say the increased bacteria presence in the water can be traced back to the area’s recent wet weather.

[snip]

Ronnie Schultz with the Galveston County Health District explained, “It could be from faulty septic systems or sanitary sewer overflows. And it could be from other areas. We’ve had rain all around southeast Texas. You know, that water is flowing down towards the beaches.”

Officials say beach waters will be tested daily until bacteria levels return to normal.

“We test for … an indicator bacteria that there is fecal matter in that water,” said Schultz.

And it’s testing positive.

Great.

But it doesn’t bother some folks:

Despite a ‘no swimming’ advisory for some beaches on Galveston Island, Justin Marcum and a fellow tourist from Ohio decided to jump in.

He said, “We just came out here from Ohio and we’re out here on vacation. So we’re out to have a good time.”

Apparently, there just are not enough opportunities to swim with turds in Ohio.

  • Thanks, Kev. Nothing like a little fecal humor before one heads to bed.

    : P

  • A long time ago, there were rumors that boats dumped their sewage into Clear Lake regularly. People still went water skiing all the time.

Remember after the 2001 flood when Mayor Lee Brown was asked if the city’s water supply was safe to drink? He said something like, "sure". I almost connipted LOL

  • Like whale poop’s better than people poop?

  • Usually one doesn’t have to contend with both whale poop AND people poop. We’re talking an overload in the poop department.

  • The beaches IS closed? Should not it be "none of the beaches ARE closed"?
