Not Andrea Harris… Noooo

It looks like she’s hanging ’em up:

It occurs to me that I have better things to do.

That thought occurs to me from time to time.

This thing is a time sink, and so is Reductio.

But since about 1997 or so, my little stabs at web publishing have been a fun hobby. I’ve met some interesting people through it. And honestly, it’s not that big of a time sink (I’m largely just commenting on stuff I’ve either read for work or read out of intellectual curiosity anyway, and I’m a fast typist). About the biggest negative has been that I read tons of short-medium articles, but my book reading has declined — then again, that may just be a result of finally finishing the silly dissertation earlier this year and not wanting to do that kind of heavy reading for a while.

I think about the only reason (short of my, say, going to work for the CIA or some such) I would shut the things down would be if they stopped being fun hobbies. So far, that’s not the case.

But the thought does cross my mind every once in a while. It crossed my mind about an hour ago, actually. It didn’t last.

But that’s a story for later.

(01-01-2004 Update) Well, well, Ms. Harris tricked us. She has a fancy new blog located here. It’s powered by WordPress, software that is, functionally, quite a bit like Nucleus.

  • Patsy,

I don’t dispute any of the nice things you say about Mrs. Parish. I never have.

I did apologize for the tone of that earlier post here: http://www.publiustx.net/in

For such devout Christians who like to trumpet your faith in email and comments here, might I suggest you think a little about the Christian trait of forgiveness?

Since you insist on belaboring the topic, however, might I ask what YOU know about the topic? Are YOU a mechanic? Have YOU inspected the car in question? Have YOU done any research on sudden acceleration syndrome?

I only ask because most cases of "sudden acceleration syndrome" are cases of driver error, despite what greedy/crooked (take your pick) trial lawyers would have you believe. It is EXTREMELY rare for a mechanical failure to cause such a problem in newer cars. Not impossible, but extremely rare — and even in those extremely rare cases, an exceptional driver can often still avoid a mishap.

I’ve made it clear that if there was a mechanical malfunction, I’ll post that news to this website. I think that’s only fair, and to be quite honest, that’s more than you’re gonna get out of the news outlets that originally reported the story.

But I remain highly skeptical of sudden acceleration syndrome in the overwhelming majority of cases.

  • MY comment is I am Mrs. Parish’s sister-in-Law whom I love very much. She has suffered like no one could even imagine. She would cry if she hit a squirrel. She is the nicest and sweetest person anyone would ever want to meet. She is always there for anybody who needs her. She does things for people who are in need continuously. She doesn’t brag about it as nobody would even know if it would come from her. She is a follower of Jesus and nothing will destroy her faith not even this. I have never in my life seen anyone cry so many tears over the ones the car ran over (not she). Believe me, all you mean spirited people would be so ashamed if you had the opportunity to meet this wonderful lady. She has so many friends, that all love her dearly. She will be fine because she has the only one that counts with her daily, and that is Jesus Christ. Believe me, she doesn’t hate the person who hurt her so deeply. She will pray for him and do it sincerely. I love her so much and have for 30 years and don’t take it lightly when someone hurts her. She is more of a lady than I am. If we had more people like her on this earth it would be a wonderful place to live. Her and her husband are striving to get through this without smart elecs that don’t know what they are talking about. Thank God, the man from England had compassion for her.

I would like to tell you what happened to me yesterday. I drove my son over to his friend’s house where we picked up that boy and his mother. We then started out of their sub-division, driving at about 15 miles per hour because it was only a short ways to a stop sign. As would be normal I put my foot on the brake to stop at the sign. Instead of slowing down, my car sped up rapidly. I pressed as hard as possible on the brake pedal and the car finally came to a stop about a car length past the sign. I was quite bewildered and a little frightened. The other people in the car tried to tell me that since my car in new (2005 Ford Focus, with 200 miles on it) maybe the transmission needs to be broken in. In any case, I was persuaded to continue driving because we had to go 30 miles to get the boys to soccer practise and would be late if we went home to change vehicles. About 25 minutes later I was pulling up to a traffic light and it turned red. I was about 3 car lengths back and no one was in front of me. I braked normally. Suddenly the engine revved loudly (it sounded like a high-pitched scream) and the car took off. It was attempting to go forward VERY FAST. I pushed harder on the brakes to no avail. The brakes made grinding and clunking noises and we kept going. We all thought we were going to crash. I could not control the car at all. I turned off the ingnition and pulled the emergency brake and we came to a stop. Other drivers were honking and yelling but no one hit us and no one was hurt. The other three people in the car and I were terribly frightened. I am a 45 year old driver. I had never heard of anything like this before but today I am searching the web and I saw your site. I am not crazy or coniving or a fraud. I am terrified to get in that car again.

  • It sounds like your car may have a mechanical problem. It’s rare, but it does happen. In the future, I would suggest that you shift the car to a neutral gear while you’re jamming on the pedals and it’s surging on you. There’s no way the car can surge if it’s not in gear.
