Research

Our crew managed a nice evening at Spanish Village with Kellas last night prior to his departure today. All told, a good visit, though it went by altogether too quickly.

Turning the attention back seriously to the dissertation tonight -- I've discovered several of the books I need for the section of the chapter I'm working on right now (progressive legal critiques of the classical police power tradition) are held not by the UH main library, but the Law Library. Not a problem, aside from the fact that the Allison Flood filled up the Law Library with water, laying waste to virtually the entire hardbound collection. Nice. So I will have to rely upon interlibrary loan. Joyous.

UH has made great progress in its use of electronic databases, many of which can even be accessed by registered students off campus, via proxy server. Unfortunately, the database I most sorely need (containing Law Journals) cannot be accessed that way, and it's a clumsy database that involves printing journal articles one page at a time. Doing that from a shared library printer is a pain in the ass (I used the database a couple of weeks ago on campus), but there is no superior alternative. So it looks like I may spend part of tomorrow night at UH -- or Saturday morning at the latest.

I don't think this part of the chapter is going to be particularly hard to write once I gather the materials, but it's old stuff, and likely to require several research runs. The harder part will be writing the transition into the chapter, and out.

Two intense workouts over the past few days have left me sore. But I'm trying to get back on the routine. I've condensed the weight training back into three days, with aerobics to follow. I hope to make it more often than 3 days per week for additional aerobics in order to train for a late-October backpacking trip, but it's hard to tell if the dissertation push is going to allow for it.
