August and Everything
Thinking back over August, I'm glad we're now into September (even though it doesn't quite feel like it yet). Numerous events (idiot handyman, taking over the idiot handyman's project, Counting Crows roadtrips, and a Kellas visit) sort of took precedence over dissertation and gym, my two (alleged) priorities right now. Technically, Graham does not leave town until Thursday, but the nightly pub trip (thus far) was pre-empted tonight, and I think the rest of his evenings are booked up until his departure -- nevertheless, it's been very good to see him.

Was discussing various group dynamics tonight with Callie. I have noticed some groups just have problems, for whatever reason. Last year's float trip was an example of that, and a more recent example took place today. It's always fascinating to try and ascertain just why certain people do not seem to be a good mix, and why things go awry. Of course, it's better to ascertain these things BEFORE, and keep them from happening, which is the whole point of thinking about these matters in the first place.

Hypothetical conversation as well tonight about wielding influence. Specifically, we were talking about wielding influence with friends and acquaintances, and what choice a person would make, given a situation in which she could influence an important decision of a friend/acquaintance in a given direction, one that would allow the friend/acquaintance to realize self-potential/fulfillment, versus one that would more directly benefit the influencer. What WOULD most people decide? What SHOULD they decide?
