Reprioritizing

For the first time in roughly a year of existence, the 8 More Miles site contracted. I took down the MP3 of the month part of the site tonight. For a few months, my interests -- musical, web, etc -- have been everywhere but RK, and I've not been motivated to do much with the site. My apathy towards the project became permanent when one of the band members -- actually, ingrate is a better term -- decided publicly (until their message board crashed -- dumbasses) to criticize the work of some of the fans who had helped make the site a better -- check that, a MUCH BETTER -- resource than the official site. I've scrapped all plans for a major redesign (which was going to include some righteous graphics -- the area of web work where I'm weakest and that I was going to improve) as well as maintenance. I haven't decided yet if the thing will just go away one day soon, but that seems most likely. I'm too much of a perfectionist to leave up a static site when something more active is clearly required. But I'm too apathetic to think about it.

It's sort of a sad thing, killing off a joint project. Callie and I have spent a lot of time and effort working on the thing, and I have to say it was a fun joint project -- until it stopped being fun. For me, the fun part was the design and implementation part, and that is probably reflective of my personality more broadly. I like the challenge of conceptualizing and putting things together. Maintenance of an accomplished concept is less appealing except in those few areas (politics, philosophy, social issues more broadly) where the passion burns deeply. And that's where I am right now -- reclaiming the time and energy spent on 8 More Miles for those other passions. Like getting the new apartment in some order. Like the dissertation (which is also suffering from the problem of being fully conceptualized and just needing tons and tons of academic prose to be written). Like enjoying other artists (local acts Mary Cutrufello and 24 Count, particularly, but also the Counting Crows). All of those things tonight seem much higher in priority than the RK Mucky Duck show this weekend, which I may just blow off entirely.
