Imminent Redesign
Most of my books are unpacked -- sort of
The urge to redesign things here has hit me full force. It started with a few nagging little things, and has grown into a laundry list. Substantively, I want to add a greymatter-powered essays section to hold some of my more serious writings (John suggested this over beers, and I agreed), I want the journal to be more anecdotal and personal, I want the blog to drive the website more than it does, and I want to dismantle some of the older, more "static personal website" aspects. In terms of design, I want a javascript-powered expandable contents menu to replace the static framed contents box (the frames served their purpose, but they have always been annoying) and I want to make use of SSI for the header/menu/footer garbage. Oh, and I plan on doing everything via Cascading Style Sheets -- no tables -- and being much more conscious of standards compliance than in the past.
Yeah, this redesign's going to take a while. But I plan on learning some new things in the process, tidying up some very bad design habits, and making it easier to express myself. All of those strike me as good things.
Besides, thinking about the redesign is much more interesting than unpacking. I unboxed most of my books tonight, and piled them out on the floor as depicted in the photo (aside from the ones that went in the two built-in bookshelves). Right now, I have no storage for them, as I had installed shelving in the old place and didn't want to remove it (it was a BITCH putting it in). So I needed to lay them out to see just how many bookcases I need to purchase (440 inches worth!), and I have this odd method of organization that got somewhat mixed up during the packing, so this will facilitate reshelving, believe it or not.
