Sooners #1

What a truly excellent fall day!

I woke up to have a bit of coffee, then watched Oklahoma beat #1 Nebraska 31-14.  The Sooners fell behind early and it looked like it could be a long day, and then from the first quarter on it looked like a Sooners scrimmage.  The offense started moving the ball effectively.  More importantly, the defense controlled Nebraska's vaunted (perhaps overrated?) offensive line, shut down their running game, and forced Nebraska to pass.  When Nebraska must pass, they will lose.  And so they did.  I thought that Frank Solich abandoned their running game way too early in the game, but it's really tough for running teams when they get behind and have to do things they don't normally do.  Two weeks ago, I wrote in an email to Dave that I didn't think Oklahoma was necessarily a top five team.  I've changed my mind.  I don't know if they'll wind up #1 -- the toughest Big 12 team left is Texas A&M at Kyle Field, which will be a tough game, and then potentially the Big 12 championship game, and THEN a shot at #1 in the Orange Bowl (maybe Florida State or Florida?).  I still don't know that I expect this team to run the table, but at the first of the season I would have thought such a thing would be a shock.  Now it won't be shocking to anyone.  It will be interesting to see how they handle being #1, which motivates opponents.

I capped off the Oklahoma victory by an excellent dinner at Spanish Village with John, Cathy, Camille, and Callie.  John and I managed to catch up on the week in politics, which we were unable to do at the Icehouse the night before. Then it was off to the Continental Club to see Reckless Kelly.  As usual, they played their asses off.  Even better, they played for an extra hour because of the daylight savings time switch.  We recorded two full minidiscs and a partial third one.  Excellent!  John shot lots of photos with his digital camera, and those should go nicely on 8 More Miles.

A damn fine day, to be sure!
