"When you see a man casting pearls without getting even a pork chop in return -- it is not against the swine that you feel indignation. It is against the man who valued his pearls so little that he was willing to fling them into the muck. . . ."

GreyMatter is Coming Soon

I spent much of the day tinkering with GreyMatter, but it's taking a while to customize it exactly as I want.  It's an incredibly flexible journal/weblog system, but the degree of flexibility means it can take some time to learn exactly how all of the variables work in order fully to take advantage of the program's power.  Surely over the next few days I will have it fully customized, and then port the journal over to it.

All of the tinkering with scripts and templates and such has been good for my brain.  It's cleared any real negative thoughts of the events of the last few days (after all, getting one's cgi scripts to work is much more important than being ditched at dinner in Kev's warped, self-centered world).  Cgi-script implementation as brain therapy.  There ya go.

Speaking of therapy and health and such, I finished The Schwarzbein Principle over the last few days, and there is much to recommend in the book, and some things that are possibly extreme.  I do like the author's whole-body approach to health in general, and the anti-sugar aspects of the book more specifically.  Indeed, the book has the best explanation of the "calorie fallacy" in nutrition that I have seen (reproduced in my Nutrition section).  On the other hand, the wholesale rejection of virtually all man-made (and extracted) substances as damaging to health at a cellular level -- while true -- seems a little unrealistic.  Certainly, we should seek to reduce the intake of some substances -- margarine and its trans-fatty acids, for example, and most likely saccharine and aspartame -- but the notion that we should avoid cold medication, caffeine, common pain-killers (like Advil) seems impractical.

I think Floyd's has now surpassed Chuy's and Spanish Village as my favorite restaurant in town.  Another fine trip to the unpretentious Cajun joint last night.  I can't recall that I've ever really had a bad experience there, and my favorite dish (blackened catfish with red beans and rice) is ALWAYS exquisite.  Overall, those three restaurants probably say something as well about my tastes, since they are unpretentious, underrated places that offer real value with a quirky atmosphere and friendly staff.
