Missing Fire Hydrant: Day 37
Lee Brown's America-Houston Held Hostage

Austin

We got a later-than-anticipated start towards Austin for the RK show at Antone's, but rolled into the funky Austin Motel around 5 or so.  What a fun little place -- an old motel just across the river from downtown that is eclectic, right down to the blue wall in one part of our room, and the yellow wall in the other part, to the bamboo cane that was serving as a curtain rod.  I definitely will visit this place again.  We were turned onto it by our friend Tracy from 8 More Miles, whom we met up with briefly at Antone's during the RK show.

The show was good, but the venue was WAY overcrowded.  We did manage to get a good recording by stuffing the recorder up in a nook right below the upstairs cage where the sound guy was.  We bailed right after RK (who opened for George DeVore, although it was supposed to be the other way around), who planned on coming back out and jamming with DeVore after their set.  We just couldn't handle the pinball effect of that crowed venue, nor the smoke.  We must be getting old!  I wish we had said goodnight to Tracy before bailing, but I just had to get outside to fresh air for a bit.

We wound up at a neighborhood bar near the motel called Trophy's Bar and Grill for a couple of beers to conclude the evening.  The folks in there were mostly regulars, I would guess, and a really friendly, happy lot.  The place also had an excellent jukebox, and we were surprised to hear a couple of Trish Murphy songs.
