Missing Fire Hydrant: Day 33
Lee Brown's America-Houston Held Hostage

The Latest Passion

I saw Trish Murphy at the Mucky Duck tonight.  She's incredibly talented, like many of the musicians I've been seeing lately.  Aside from a couple of songs, she did an unaccompanied set, playing guitar and handling vocals.  I didn't know her stuff prior to tonight -- just what was on her website.  I expected a more alt-chick-rock type show, but instead it was fairly folksy.  Impressions:  great voice, strong songwriting, probably would benefit from a band backing her.  Lowbrow impressions:  cute chick, but she needs to eat something.

Her dad was in the audience, and it was kind of cool because she really paid attention to him.  I liked that.  She also wandered through the crowd during one song, which was cool.  I was impressed with her.

We had a fairly friendly couple at our table.  I rambled on for some time about minidiscs and bootlegs and other things that seemed to astound them.  The dude was kind of laid back, the wife seemed highly adventurous, threatening to come to Austin and see the boys this weekend.  We'll see.

All of which leads to:

I have a new passion (as the website contents page would describe it).  It's really not new.  It's been building.  Much like the backpacking passion did not happen overnight, neither did the latest.  But when I sit at a table with strangers and carry on about live Texas music and "cleaning up" bootleg recordings, I know it's past being a diversion.  Nope, it's something I obsess about now.  I sat through the show tonight comparing it to our Mary Cutrufello show, and thinking how much more I enjoyed that AND how much better the recording was.  The next step, I imagine, will be to throw together a Texas Music bootlegs page -- I've been thinking about it already.  Yep, it's definitely a passion now.  That's what I needed, huh?

And while we're on the topic:  It was cool tonight when Trish mentioned that some of her musical friends had gone to perform at the Texas State Society Boots and Black Tie Inaugural Ball, those friends being Reckless Kelly.  We cheered.  Loudly.
