Foolish Words

When Dave Maggard was hired as UH athletics director, he made the statement that he never wanted UH to lose to Rice at anything, ever.

In the major sports so far this season, UH has lost to Rice at football and men’s basketball (tonight, by one point). And going back further, it hasn’t really gone all that well.

Way to raise the expectations, David!

Maybe UH’s new motto needs to be, we’ll have no excuses for losing to Sam Houston State at anything!

Still, I like what Penders is doing at UH. It’s just going to take some time to revive a program that’s been in the toilet as long as UH’s has.

  • Ha, well, what else to expect of Lopez? 🙂

    That’s some fun stuff, actually.

UH has just had an unfortunate run in the athletics department. The CoogFans folks of course love Maggard, although I have trouble figuring it out. I guess because he actually listens to them, and lets them have their little tailgate parties at the Robertson Dump, and schedules teams that UH has no business playing (Miami, OU).

Maybe, MAYBE, when we get competitive in our own weak conference, and get competitive with our crosstown rival, THEN we can think about upgrades.

I dunno. I’m enjoying the Penders crew, and I always enjoy Rayner Noble’s teams, so I’m glad there’s plenty of basketball and baseball ahead of us. Especially baseball.

What’s the outlook at Rice this season for baseball? Unlike some UHers, I don’t lurk the Rice boards. 🙂 I’m sure Wayne Graham will put together a hell of a team, as usual.

From what I can tell, the CoogFans types like Maggard because he says he’ll make Houston competitive with everyone in every sport. While I admire the attitude, it does cause him to say some rash things, like his over-the-top comments about Rice.

I wouldn’t be too hard on UH for scheduling teams like Oklahoma or Miami. Rice does the same thing; in the last few years the Owls have played Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas. With schools in non-BCS conferences earning something like $250,000 per year from TV contracts and bowl payouts versus $5 million per year for schools in BCS conferences, the difference has to be made up somewhere, and one way of doing it is for the non-BCS schools to collect half-million dollar paydays to fill out the schedules of the big boys. It leads to a lot of losses, but at least it pays the bills.

Yes, he’ll do what he’s done everywhere he’s been – take a collection of good but not necessarily great recruits, add a few diamonds in the rough, and turn them into a national title contender by the end of the season.
