HEB Central Market

Callie and I finally made a trip tonight to the nearby HEB Central Market, which opened to much fanfare this spring. So much fanfare, in fact, that many Houstonians, including ourselves, have waited for the buzz (and crowds) to die down just to go check it out.

I must say that the place was not overhyped. It IS all that -- just a huge supermarket with an incredible selection of fresh veggies, fruits, meats, cheeses, gourmet items, etc. The produce is easily the best in town, and the prices are very competitive with the regular grocery stores (and blow away main competitor Whole Foods). We went as spectators, rather than shoppers (though Callie did buy some chestnuts), and the experience still took over an hour.

As an aside, there were many, many items in the store that I can pretty much guarantee are NOT available in Bartlesville, Oklahoma or Battle Mountain, Nevada. Then again, I looked over the tomatos very carefully, and I'm afraid they do not measure up to the quality of those produced in a little place I know just outside of Pawhuska, Oklahoma.

If that last paragraph doesn't make complete sense to you, that's not surprising. I've omitted context necessary for most readers to understand it. That context is the subject of a forthcoming essay (or maybe just a journal entry), as soon as I find a little time to think it through completely.

How's that for a teaser?
