Lifted Text?

In an article dated 3 October 2001, the BBC notes:

The sheer scale of the BNP's victory means that Mrs Zia is in a powerful enough position to take decisions without requiring the support of her controversial allies.

In its 6 October 2001 issue, the Economist notes:

The sheer scale of the BNP's victory on October 1st means that Mrs Zia is in a powerful enough position to take decisions without requiring the support of her controversial allies.

Even though both of these organizations are based in the UK -- and thus the use of language might be expected to be similar -- it strikes me that one (or both) of these organizations lifted this text, either from the other or a third-party (wire?) source. It's just too similar.

I would expect better.
