Rethinking Rousseau
- Rousseau, First Discourse
Since reading it a few days ago, I've been a little bothered by Hanah's assessment of Rousseau's First Discourse in a recent journal entry. So I spent tonight revisiting that Rousseau's essay. Despite Rousseau's flaws, the essay is much more powerful than I remember. It raises a question that I think is fundamental to the study of political philosophy, although I'm going to hold off further analysis in order not to bias the reading of a handful of other people who are joining this effort.
With the redesign finished and no longer consuming so much free time, I spent much of today trying to get the apartment in some order, cleaning, putting away boxes, etc -- things I have neglected because my site had gotten to the point it was annoying me. The place is not perfect, but I have most of my clutter up and/or clean in all of the rooms but the spare bedroom (ack!) and the main bedroom.
Speaking of the redesign -- the entire effort (handcoding the new pages and stylesheets, sifting through the old material and discarding much of it, changing the organization) has been an incredible intellectual stimulant. Pushing my brain to do the redesign has also energized me intellectually in many other areas, which I find interesting.
Now that I have the essays section of the website up, I probably should do some writing, huh?
One final note before I crash. We decided to try the "11-2 Buffet" advertised at the Pot Pie Pizzeria this morning. We were surprised to find that it was a BREAKFAST buffet, not a pizza buffet. We really wanted pizza, but were also surprised that the breakfast fare was pretty good and cheap, and the lack of a crowd was a definite plus.
