The Twin Idiots

I despise hypocrisy and logical inconsistency, whatever the source. So yesterday I about blew a gasket when I read the WSJ's Best of the Web commentary on the Chuy's/Jenna Bush flap. I was not going to comment on said flap, because it is trivial (much like the question of whether an idiot who brought a lawsuit under ADA should be able to force a sport to change its rules, which is certainly NOT Supreme Court fodder). But sometimes conservatives cannot help themselves, and have to adopt the sanctimonious whining more characteristic of liberals. Such is the case with the WSJ blogger, who linked to this article after whining about the Chuy's "political vendetta" (I am not kidding) and concluding "Next time we're in Texas, we'll certainly make a point of avoiding Chuy's."

First, the decision of the manager to call 911 was questionable, but not outrageous. Given that the President's semi-alcoholic daughters ARE celebrities, and that the Chuy's on Barton Springs Road IS ALWAYS packed (I aborted my last trip there after finding out there was a wait of over an hour -- just to give an indication), it's not unreasonable to think a police presence might be justified. That's not to say the call wasn't motivated by other considerations, but it is NOT outrageous on its face.

Second, the ditzy Bush daughters WERE violating the law! I don't like those particular laws, and I'm not going to say I've not broken those same laws. But if you break the law and get caught, you are NOT ipso facto a victim of a political vendetta! Just as I found it amazing that Bill Clinton could flaunt the nation's laws in pursuit of multiple cheap gropes and then claim (with a straight face, biting his lip even) that he was a victim, so too I am amazed by the same "rule of law" conservatives whining that the Bush's clueless daughters are victims of a left-wing Tex-Mex political conspiracy! Do these people not realize how idiotic they sound?! It's even more amazing that some of these conservative writers -- the same people who lambasted Clinton's dubious (but constitutionally valid) last-minute pardons -- have suggested the authorities should give the Bush bimbos a break simply because they are his daughters! Excuse me, but I don't recall that being the conservative line when Roger Clinton was the subject. Yeah, selective enforcement of the laws is what conservatives are all about! Sure. Whatever.

I've come to the conclusion that the Bush girls -- and Jenna in particular -- are idiots. What kind of moron receives a probationary sentence for an alcohol offense, and then gets cited for doing something worse in a public place -- one of Austin's busiest Tex-Mex joints -- a month later?! Political vendetta? Please. Pseudo-alcoholic thinking-impaired first-twins? That's more like it. Yeah, the Chuy's manager probably did see an opportunity to embarrass the idiots. My suggestion: If you have a high profile, don't behave like an idiot in public places and you'll reduce your chances of becoming a "victim."

One more suggestion: order the creamy jalapeno sauce with your chips and salsa on your next trip to Chuy's. It's awesome.
