McCallum Gets The Boot
UH head basketball coach Ray McCallum was "reassigned" today.
Now, Dave Maggard has to make the second toughest hire of his tenure (the first being Art Briles last year). The program just can't take much more of the Alvin Brooks/Clyde Drexler/Ray McCallum level of *ahem* success. I feel for McCallum, because I think he's a class act and a good coach. But he couldn't recruit here, he couldn't win, and his style was not interesting. It wasn't going to turn around here for him. Unfortunate, for us and for him, but time to move on.
There are lots of coaches out there who are rumored to be possibilities. HBU's coach has been mentioned, South Alabama's coach, UTEP's coach, Nolan Richardson, John Lucas, David Rose and even the twentysomething assistant at Arizona (Pastner, please, gawd, no). I'm definitely in the minority on this, but if Nolan Richardson still has the fire and wants to show the backwards idiots at Arkansas what he can do in a slightly more tolerant environment, I'd love to see him here. We'll see.
(03-09-2004 Update) Interestingly, HBU's coach, Ron Cottrell, is a former Nolan Richardson assistant, and coaches the same style of ball. His HBU teams have been wildly successful at their level of play, his players graduate, and he won't need to be introduced to this area. This one could make a lot of sense.

Nolan didn't come over on a slave ship, you know.
I think Nolan would be a good hire, but not sure he wants to be in a large metro area like that. I think he's more comfortable being the big fish in an itty-bitty pond. But, that's just my two cents.
40 minutes of hell... And that's just a press conference with him.

My main concern is I don't think UH can afford Nolan. We're going to have to find a bargain coach, probably someone who wants to be in this area in the first place. If Nolan's got a chip on his shoulder and wants to show everyone what he can do, maybe he'd be that guy. Of the "name" guys who have been mentioned, though, John Lucas seems most likely to me. Maybe David Rose, but I just don't know about his ability to recruit.
Phi Slama Jama was OH SO LONG ago. This is just sad. Where is our Eddie Sutton? *sigh*
