From Least To Beast?
The NFC East has been a pretty weak division in recent years, earning the nickname NFC Least.
But a couple of coaching changes this week could change all that, and soon.
It's hardly a surprise that the Giants named Tom Coughlin head coach. The only real question is what took so long.
It is a surprise that Dan Snyder was able to do what no other dollar-waving owner has been able to do, and that's talk Joe Gibbs into coming back to coaching. I didn't think Snyder had it in him. I figured he would continue along the Jerry Jones post-Jimmy/pre-Bill route (Switzer, then Gailey, then Campo) for a few more years before settling on a real NFL coach to right the ship. Instead, he's bringing back a guy that ranks right up there with Parcells and Vermeil.
Throw in Andy Reid's Eagles, and the NFC East looks like it's going to be a lot more competitive next season.

Please don't give The Danny so much credit. Joe Gibbs decided he wanted to come back before he knew there was going to be an opening with the Redskins. Gibbs had several meetings with the Atlanta Falcons right after they fired Reeves. Finally, The Danny has someone who really might work out. Let's hope he doesn't find a way to screw this opportunity the same way he has the others.
Specifically, I'm thinking of Schottenheimer who took the Redskins to 8-8, their best records since The Danny came to town. Danny wouldn't give up control and booted Marty when flashy long-shot was willing to come on board.
You can read that last paragraph again and substitute Brian Mitchell for Schottenheimer and sub Deion for flashy long-shot.
Seems my beloved Redskins are always at the top of their game during the off-season, then when they start playing the promise falls apart. I'm hoping this effort really works because if it doesn't, where does The Danny go from here?

Gibbs is a minority owner in the Falcons, so it's natural he had some discussions with them. But no way they were going to throw money around like Danny boy, and that had to play some role.
But yes, I think you're right that the guy's had some doubts about leaving, and has seen from Parcells and Vermeil that it's possible to come back and have success. So why not? Life's too short to live with doubts.
