The Sound Of Nitwits

Houston used to have a great station that played great alt-country music by Texas artists.

It even used the great motto, "The Sound of Texas."

And then the liberal nitwits decided KPFT was too popular and not political enough, and staged their little coup.

Now, they occasionally play some Texas stuff, but it's not even comparable to, say, KNBT. And so there's no station in Houston that regularly plays any country but that Nashville bile.

Anyway, KPFT is in the middle of elections, and apparently this merits coverage by the Comical:

Houston Pacifica members protested outside KPFT offices in the mid-1990s against programming choices by then-station manager Garland Ganter, who critics said increased the number of listeners, but dulled the station's political edge.

Members protested outside the offices again a few years ago when they felt the national governing body was usurping their power, said Duane Bradley, KPFT's current station manager.

"The elections will reconnect the community and the radio station," Bradley said. "Members will feel a sense of ownership for the station."

Ummm... Okay. Democracy! Now! Or something. But probably not much cutting-edge Texas alt-country.

One of the joys of living and working in Jersey Village is that I pick up College Station stations. Barely, though.

You need satellite radio! Check out XM next time you're in an electronics store. You'll want to listen to channel 12 - Cross Country.

Renee: I'm not in the car enough to justify the expense of satellite radio, but even so, nothing on satellite compares to, say, KNBT in New Braunfels or that mainly-Texas station in Victoria for Texas alt-country. At home, I can stream or hit the mp3s, so it's not such a big deal. Still, KPFT was such a GOOD music station during the "Sound of Texas" era that ya'll have to put up with me whining about the stupid liberals who ruined it every once in a while. :)

Hey Kevin,

My show "CB Radio" is starting in the next couple of weeks and if you'll send me a list of requests, I'll make sure at least 2 are played each week! Plus, I'll plug this site! It'll be broadcast on http://www.TexasRadio1.com. We are starting on Wednesday nights from 7-9 PM, but will most likely go 5 nights a week soon.

I digress...

I wrote to tell you to check out Jay Johnson at the Firehouse this Friday night. He's opening for Tommy Alverson (another fave). Jay is AMAZING and a really fun show everytime! He and his wife are good friends of mine and I know you'll love him.

I'm counting the hours to Jay Farrar!!!

Yeah, those were the good old days. Now KPFT is nothing but a vast wasteland except on the weekends.

Cindy: Thanks for the tip! Friday night is probably unlikely for me, though. I'm determined to go catch McClure tonight at the Firehouse (I may bail if he doesn't get himself on stage before 11 or so, though -- Thursdays are hard). And of course I can't miss Thrift Store Cowboys Saturday night. Friday may well be a day of recovery.

Yes, on Jay Farrar! Yes!

Thrift Store Cowboys? Saturday night? Where?

They're playing Dan Electro's. I hate to admit that I've never been to that venue, even though they have some good acts listed from time to time. I've got permission to record, so I'm hoping for a good show.
