A Mucky Duck New Year

As I mentioned in this post, we spent New Year's Eve at the Mucky Duck, mainly because it is within walking distance and we knew Rick Poss would be playing guitar for the band that night.

In restrospect, I can't say it was a very good choice.

The whole thing was overpriced for what we got.

Because what we got was:

Still, what made it all worthwhile is that Callie and I got to spend the evening with really good friends, and that part was excellent. It saved the evening, actually.

I just feel bad for dragging them out to such an underwhelming experience. Mea culpa.

smattrafact, Kevin, we had a great time. My salmon was excellent, and I'm still humming that Blue Mink song -- what's it called? -- you're my bundle of joy desire (something like that). I think we need to sort out the final bill, though. They didn't seem to get that part right.

You guys are good sports. Yes, they did confound the final tab slightly (did I mention the service was terrible?), but I'm actually happy they did that. Call it my treat for putting you in a cramped space with mediocre food and an unexpected number of covers I hope never to hear again. :)

Who was playing?

The show at the Firehouse was fabulous. If Randy hadn't been the opening act and could have played for another half an hour, it would have been his best show to date. My friend Jason - not a country fan at all - came away VERY impressed.

The driving situation was an absolute mess. Four accidents or so within a mile proximity to the Firehouse.

Alex: It was Jack Saunders. He and Rick are old, good friends, and have been playing together forever. I like Saunders's original stuff, but there wasn't much of it that night.

I've noticed there's a Days Inn within a very short walk of the Firehouse. If there's a New Year's show that looks good again at the Firehouse, I'm thinking THAT is the way to go for the evening.

I enjoyed the show at the Mucky Duck. As I mentioned at the time, I thought all those covers were a bit below a band with lots of their own original music, but a couple of the renditions were good. It's always worth seeing Rick Poss play guitar.

With all the oldies music and the drunk people dancing terribly, I felt I got the entire New Year's experience :)

Anyway, the "four accidents within a mile proximity of the Firehouse" thing was the whole reason to avoid the long drive. There are only two kinda people on the street at 1am on New Year's -- drunks and cops, neither of them are very good news.

So I feel we did OK. And the Mucky Duck let me spend a New Year's out with my son for the first time, which was very cool.

Kevin,

Yeah, I like Saunders from what I've heard so I'm sorry the show was a disappointment. Covers are fine, but it gets annoying when their own stuff is good and they seem to stick to the covers. It's something Jason Boland tends to do on a bad day.

John,

It was a good reason to stay away. As there are no great music venues in either Jersey Village or Clear Lake I was going to have to weather the roads anyway. Plus you got to spend it with your son (which you wouldn't have been able to at the Firehouse) and that outsells anything any particular venue has to offer.
