Another Bus Homicide In Houston

Beware of the Bus!

Just one word of advice for you Super Bowl patrons -- Watch out for the buses!

Metro bus kills another pedestrian in downtown Houston

"The driver says he never saw the pedestrian," said Houston police Sgt. C.J. Klausner. "That's not uncommon," he said. "They're so high up."

It is the second fatal accident involving a Metro bus in a month. Both accidents happened along Smith Street downtown.

Jeffrey Yu-Chang Kao, 31, of the 8500 block of Manhattan, was struck by a left-turning bus at Walker and Smith Nov. 3, and died Nov. 5 at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

The driver of that bus, Alroyce Sheppherd, 53, was charged with criminally negligent homicide last week and remained in the Harris County Jail Tuesday in lieu of $30,000 bail.

It's not gonna be pretty when national journalists descend on this place in a month or so.

For some reason, the Chronicle has removed this article from the archives.

"Metro bus kills another pedestrian in downtown Houston"

I was trying to reference it on my blog, but your site seems to be one of the few that still has the reference. Strange, huh?

This criminal charging is a disturbing trend that all of us have to worry about. Anyone who drives in downtown houston knows that driving can be more than a challenge. It is the duty of the driver to avoid hitting anyone on foot; however, mistakes happen and unfortunately these mistakes are terrible. Should this bus driver be charged with a criminal offense? Was there criminal intent? Was the neglence enough to justify criminal charges?

I feel sympathy for the family of the person fatally hit by the bus. -But should an accident be determined a crime?

"Mistakes happen" ?????? I realize you're trying to assume an intellectual stance, but your choice of words leave much to be desired. I'm not taking issue with what you are saying, but the way you are saying it. Really, just take a moment, and think: think about the way your words will come across to anyone who loved and knew this man. I've seen more tactful delivery in a shampoo commercial.
