Drayton McLane, Windbag

I get so sick and tired of hearing that windbag Drayton McLane's cheerleading about being a champion, only to see him constantly trade stars in an effort to cut payroll.

It's also annoying when the man whines about how much money he's losing on the Astros (despite the quarter-billion dollar taxpayer-financed stadium), but refuses to open his books.

In fact, it's hard to take the man seriously at all.

Unless you write for the Comical, and then it is apparently your job to promote Drayton's BS:

After losing $15 million this year, McLane might face more losses in 2004 if he signs Pettitte. If Pettitte needs more persuading, though, several Astros will line up to call him with a recruiting pitch. Jeff Bagwell promises to put in a call if it is needed.
Note that bolded sentence.

McLane refuses to open his books fully, so there's no objective way of knowing how much money he's made or lost. The Comical's sportswriter apparently just decided that if McLane said it, it must be true. Not even worthy of some sort of qualification, such as "After claiming losses of $15 million, McLane...."

Pitiful. Comical.

As to the substance, I will be shocked if the Astros actually sign Petitte, because I do think McLane's too cheap. I hope he proves me wrong.

(12-03-03 Update) Charlie Pallilo ripped the Comical for that $15 million reference on AM 610 today. I would welcome Charlie to the website, but he's one of the few personalities on that station who isn't brain dead, so I'm sure he found it on his own and not here.

I think it's very doubtful. Hunsicker seems to have been programmed to keep our hopes down. Think it was on the radio yesterday -- he said that fans have to realize that Pettitte won't guarantee us a playoff spot. I am, however, leaving a large space under my Christmas tree, just in case.
