Random Observations
I took a trip across downtown and through the third ward earlier today. Here are some random observations:
- Traffic lights for east-west streets downtown are not synchronized. Indeed, they are nearly the opposite. I don't think you could design a better system to stop cross traffic. Spending billions on rail probably isn't going to be much help with this problem, eh?
- Most of the downtown streets near Main (the trolley line street) are falling apart. It STILL resembles a disaster area. It will not be any better by the Super Bowl (I know this city), and that's going to be unfortunate. Sports journalists have wicked pens. What shall it be, I wonder? World Class Potholes? World Class Disaster? It won't be good.
- The wires running above the length of the trolley line on either side are UGLY (hence my renaming the rail line the trolley line). Does anyone recall seeing these ugly things in the METRO renderings of rail? I certainly don't. World Class UGLY.
- There were more Vote Yes On Metro signs in the Third Ward than any other place I've seen in the city. They far outnumbered Sylvester Turner signs as well. So, the very people who stand to lose the most from the trolley system when there are budget overruns (and there will be) and bus services must be cut are being pushed hardest to vote for it. Nice.
