Dallas Envy Is Not A Convincing Argument
Owen calls attention to dueling op-eds from Michael Berry (R) and Bill White (D) on rail in Houston.
White, of course, stresses the term "mobility" because that's the new, friendlier euphemism for rail. White still seems to be suffering from Dallas envy.
Berry trys to square the promises made by rail proponents with actual numbers, and finds that it can't be done.
I'm still waiting for a better argument for rail in Houston than "It will make us a world-class city" or "It will be cool to ride to the airport" or "Dallas has it, so we should too" or "If we inflate ridership estimates despite all available evidence, that will somehow make it so."

At some point, I want to blow the "World class city" argument out of the water. Not for rail, but for everything. I find myself almost uniformly against anything whose soul justification is "it'll get outsiders to respect us more"...

Alex,
The superbowl should put that worry for Houstonians forever to rest.
