Good deal on synthetic oil at AutoZone (Better at Advance!)
I've decided the Rogue is going to get full synthetic oil when it's time for changes (Mobil 1 Extended Performance).
Right now, AutoZone has an excellent package deal on five quarts of Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil and a Mobil 1 oil filter -- $34.99. That''s about $15 off AutoZone's usual (high) price.
Wal-Mart normally sells a five-quart container for around $29, and the Mobil 1 filter (not available at Wal-Marts I have checked) usually goes for around $10, so the AutoZone deal is a pretty good one.
UPDATE: Advance Auto Parts is offering the combo for $29.99 in October. Wow.

So, does the Rogue take a full 5 quarts? And are you going to change it yourself? Back when oil was cheaper, and I was driving Ranger II (pre-Taurus, which I bet would be a cast-iron Gwen Ifill to change), I found it so much of a pain to change the oil compared to Ranger I that I found I could take it to Wal-Mart and they could change the oil for about $1.50 more than it cost me to buy the oil and filter and change it myself, so I went that route and haven't looked back.

R: Every oil change on the Liberty was done at the Kirby Mister CarWash Lube Center, which always treated me very well and did good, honest work (never trying to upsell me on crap I didn't need, unlike Firestone every time I went in for a rotation or alignment -- which I will probably do at NTB on the Rogue).
I had the Rogue oil changed this weekend at the closest Nissan dealership to me (not the one I bought from, actually). They were cool with me bringing in my own oil/filter, and only charged $12 for the service.
The reason I decided to go with them was 1) the price was good and 2) if there's ever a powertrain warranty question, they will have all the records.
I am loving the 2.5L and CVT combo so far, but it's a more complex system than the Liberty was running, so I just decided to baby the thing at the dealer from the get-go, at least through the powertrain warranty period.

That's interesting, and not a bad deal, I'm thinking. How many miles does Nissan recommend between oil changes, given the switch to synthetic?
I was worried about the CVT handling the 170 or so horsepower in your Rogue, but I just noticed the other day that you can get something like a 295 horsepower V6/CVT in a Maxima, so the French/Japanese carmaker may have this whole system figured out-good for them.

My big question now is change frequency.
Nissan's extreme-service recommended interval for oil/filter changes is 3,750 miles. The normal-service recommended interval is double that, I believe.
Now, I have no intention of running even the EP Mobil synthetic/filter to 7,500 miles (required to be safe on the warranty), and am leaning towards six months/5-6k intervals. I'm sure that's probably overkill, but I just think it's a good investment.
Thoughts on that interval from anyone in the peanut gallery?

PS: Nissan's CVT success with the high-horsepower engine is one of several things that pushed me to the Rogue over the Jeep CVT/4 cylinder offerings. They really do seem to have the technology down.

I normally change every 5K, mainly becuase of the heat and poor air quality here in Houston. Every independent mechanic I've talked to said that 3-4K is much too often and overkill.
