Greece Trip: 05/12/08 (Mon) -- Leaving Paros
From 05/08/08 on, I had pretty much stopped writing up my bullet notes in my written journal. I may fill them in a little here, but this is mostly just a chronological dump from what's in my notebook. I regret that I've inevitably lost some detail this way, but I really got into Paros and didn't feel like writing in detail.
- Breakfast... where else?
- Checkout. We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Argonauta, and hope to stay here again one day.
- Off to catch the ferry on what should be a leisurely departure. Except we've lost ZiZi, who has wandered off. This is annoying to put it mildly.
- The ferry is running late. And that's good, because the people at the hotel forgot to give Callie's passport back to her. Dude runs up with it and apologizes. It's all good.
- The Sea Jet 2 fast ferry is wild. It rides on top of the water. It bounces everywhere. It's both cool and scary as hell. I can't wait to ride another one!- We're in Rafina, the old port suburb of Athens where Callie and family used to have relatives and spend time.
- The Corali Hotel, where we are staying, is smoky and not the cleanest. Easily the worst of the places we've stayed on the trip. But since the consensus is that we need to avoid Rafina on future trips, this is okay.- We do manage lunch at the one restaurant we really like. They have the best pasta. Hard to explain why. I think because they use olive oil in it. I dunno. It's just damn good, as are their potatoes. Usually.
- KLM online advance checkin is not smooth. Why should I expect otherwise? Impossible to call them. We'll sort it out at the airport I guess.
- We walk Rafina, and Callie laments the development. We do catch a sunset.
- The super market isn't very super. In fact, it seems kind of bombed out. Far less impressive than the kickass market on Paros.
- Late dinner, and they serve us frozen fries from a box. Blech! This is supposed to be Greece! Oh, we miss the Naxos potatoes! *whine*
- We're sad the grand adventure in Greece is coming to an end, but I think we're all ready to escape Rafina.
- To beat the smoke in the hotel, I wet a towel and place it across the bottom of the door (where smoke from the hallway seems to be wafting in). We run the fan from the AC all night. That does the trick. Gawd, I hate cigarette smoke.
