Greece Trip: 05/09/08 (Fri) -- Toodling around paros
From 05/08/08 on, I had pretty much stopped writing up my bullet notes in my written journal. I may fill them in a little here, but this is mostly just a chronological dump from what's in my notebook. I regret that I've inevitably lost some detail this way, but I really got into Paros and didn't feel like writing in detail.
- Breakfast at the coffeeshop just underneath our room at the hotel. The hotel offers breakfast during the high season, but we're still a bit early, so the coffeeshop is just fine (the omelettes are actually quite good, if pricey). We get to watch all goings on. And the Parian waitress is cute, so that's nice too.
- Walk back up, arrange a car rental, and drive down the coast. This island is not as interesting as Naxos in terms of driving.
- We do wander upon a brand new church up in the hills. Kulla later tells us that the guy tending the church and telling her about it was insistent the end of the world was upon us. For some reason, she didn't want me to hear his theories. I'm pretty low key about these things. If W hasn't destroyed the world by now, I really don't know if it's truly within his power (or desire). Ah well! - The Valley of the Butterflies is closed, gated, and utterly disappointing. Greek tourist trap? - Stop at Aliki for lunch. YUMMY calamari -- true calamari. We make a note that we need to come back to this little fishing village. A man is thumping his octopus through our entire lunch. THIS is a real, off-the-beaten-path fishing village. I wonder how long it will stay that way?- Back to town and a nap. We're acting like Greeks!
- We go wandering up the other side, and have drinks at a rooftop bar with a great view. Our lunch was so late that we decide against dinner just for the sake of dinner.
*grumble grumble* I have to have one of my breakfast bars in the middle of the night to stop the stomach grumbling. A late night walk helps with other grumbling.
