Greece Trip: 05/08/08 (Thurs) -- Goodbye Amorgos, Hello Paros

From here on, I stopped filling in my bullet notes in my written journal. I may fill them in a little here, but this is mostly just a chronological dump from what's in my notebook. I regret that I've inevitably lost some detail this way, but I really got into Paros and didn't feel like writing in detail.

- Chinese fire drill wakeup today! Nothing like early mornings and travel!

- We get our ferry tix with several minutes to spare... although the ferry turns out to be late, so we have plenty of time to spare.

- It's cold and windy. Have I mentioned this? It's also raining off and on. This weather was a shame for such an outdoorsy island. We'll have to come back here sometime and try the hiking again.

- The Blue Star ferry has internet via satellite. Cool. It's not the cheapest, but it allows for some research on hotels. Although ultimately we just decide to make note of a few places, and to check them out on foot once we arrive. We'll have plenty of time, and it's the off season.

- We're finally at Paros!

- It's cold here too. We deposit Kulla and Zizi at a cafe, then commence walking the island looking at hotels. We look at several that might work, and almost settle on one, but decide to look at one more -- the Hotel Argonauta, recommended by several guidebooks. We like this family run hotel best, and decide to stay there. The rooms are clean, cheery, and airy, the lounge area outside the rooms is nice, the location is superb, and the balconies (and views of the goings on) are sweet. Plus it's not that expensive in the offseason.

- Lunch at Yiannopoulous. This place makes the best moussaka I've had. He seems to use pork sausage for the ground meat portion. It's unusual. I think it's delicious.

- The ancient church is really cool. We take Callie's mom to visit. We will make several visits here, and collect lots of photos.

- Callie hits the shower. I hit a nice nap. Finally feeling a little rested! And am really liking Paros for some reason. Perhaps because our hotel is in the center of activity.

- Dinner at Christo's, which looks west and is recommended by several guidebooks. The food was not spectacular, but the sunset certainly was.

- Callie and I go wandering the old city in the evening, and stumble into Pirate Jazz/Blues bar. It was... odd. And not really in a compelling way. At least not to us. And it wasn't very busy. Maybe it's more of a high season draw.
