Roger, then and later

On his Feeding the Monster blog, Seth Mnookin posts links to photos of Roger Clemens in an Astros uniform, versus early in his career with the Red Sox. I've combined those images into one for purposes of comparison:

Roger Clemens, then and later

Photos don't say anything about how Roger's transformation (which seems much like the transformation of Barry Bonds) took place, of course.*

* The PubliusTX.net reader representative advised us to add that disclaimer, lest Mr. Clemens' high-priced legal/PR reps decide the blog was somehow defaming the incredibly transformed pitcher.

UPDATE: Pallilo posts this amusing photoshop.

Kevin,

Not that I would ever defend Roger Clemens on anything, but that Red Sox picture had to have been taken at least 15-20 years before Roger made that face while with the Astros. I can tell you for a fact that I look considerably bigger than 15 years ago, and I took no steriods.

You have to smear Rogroid better than that.

Roger looks little like he did when he broke into the bigs.

Same with Barry Bonds.

How it happened and whether that is even an issue is a matter I'll leave to others to decide. Like many issues, the hardcore members in both camps will never be convinced by the arguments from the other camp. Sort of like the BCS.

But, there's no denying that Clemens and Bonds look different that they did when they broke into the bigs, and that the transformation is substantively different than, say, the transformation around my middle over a decade and a half of getting older. :)

Whatever conclusions anyone wants to draw are their own. I just thought I'd illustrate another blogger's links.

It's not that I'll never be convinced that he took steroids. It will just take more than the word of an ex-employee with a vested interest in saving his own ass by telling prosecutors whatever they want to hear to outweigh the decades of good will that Roger Clemens has earned.
