Austin Collins at the Firehouse

A couple of my friends from the (sadly) defunct Dead End Angels are playing with Austin Collins now.

He's opening at the Firehouse tonight, so I'm planning on checking it out.

I haven't ever seen the guy live, and have only heard a few tracks off his CD (well before the revamped rhythm section). I haven't been seeing very many shows of late. I hope the smoke doesn't kill us. Blar.

Well rats! I specifically looked for shows to go to while I was in town but didn't recognize (or want to see) what I found. How was it?

What's the status of Houston's proposed smoking ban?

I liked. Nice tight sound. BIG sound. More rocking than country, a little more complex than most Texas bands. The harmonies kind of suffered thanks to the Firehouse sound (oh, we miss the days of Crazy Jack). I'm going to be very interested in the new CD they are working in.

Smoking ban kicks in in a few months. The libertarian in me wouldn't have necessarily imposed it. The music fan in me is likely to be a lot happier, because it's gotten to the point that we just don't go to many shows because of the nastiness.

That's how I feel about it. I don't like it on an ideological level, but it sure does make things more convenient. The restaurant smoking ban was quite handy because there aren't all that many restaurants in Pocatello and one of the few late-night ones ignored the smoking ban and as a consequence Camille never wanted to go there. If that were true of many restaurants it would have made finding a restaurant (already tough in Poky) that much harder.

The same applies when trying to entice Camille to go to a music show. It's much easier when I can say that the smoke in the place isn't bad.

But I still can't make myself like the idea of the government telling a private venue that it can't allow legal behavior, despite how much more convenient it's made my life!

Kevin, I did like AC's version of "If You Want It That Much" than DEA's. I saw them here in SA not knowing that half the band was DEA until I recognized their bassist.

Good show that night at Rolling Oaks.
