My Kind Of Town
I cashed in some frequent-flyer miles to sneak off to Chicago for the weekend.
Things that are definitely on the itinerary include:
- Son Volt and Toad the Wet Sprocket at the Taste of Randolph Street Festival.
- Greektown
- Frank Lloyd Wright's home/studio
- King Tut at the great Field Museum
- The Cubs and Detroit at Wrigley
- Drinks with Sedosi (who by happenstance is somewhere here in town)
- General puttering around and peoplewatching in this great city.
- The train from O'Hare got us to our downtown hotel in about thirty minutes. Effective mass transit from an airport. What a concept! Apparently, Yellow Cab Co does not run Chicago.
- The train from O'Hare was a little rough in spots. That was kind of a surprise.
- Cars don't run into the trains here, because they are elevated or otherwise segregated from traffic. Imagine!
- Traffic Management Authority officers were directing traffic downtown around lunchtime today and keeping things moving. I wonder if Mayor White got his grand idea for civilian traffic cops from Mayor Daley? I wish he would start to adopt more ideas from Mayor Daley, honestly.
- IAH was EFFED UP this morning. The Parking Spot took an inordinate amount of time to get us from parking to the airport today. Continental's bag drop took an uncharacteristically long time. TSA took their characteristically long time. Maybe this is just how early morning flights go. I usually fly later in the day. We didn't miss the flight or anything, but it's a good thing we gave ourselves what we thought was lots of extra time.
Okay, I'm in Chicago to be in Chicago, not to blog. So that's all for now.

What, no trip to Boy's Town on the itenerary?
How about a ride out to DeKalb to visit with those nice, friendly people at NIU?

It's not a trip to Chi-Town without a stop at Gino's East Pizza. I'm there every night while I'm in town.

Reg: The diet will take a real hit if I start pounding the Chicago-style pizza, but I may have to give that place a try!
Any recommendations on steak/chop houses in the downtown area? I'm relying on Chicago Transit (which has been great so far), so my mobility is constrained a little...
We still have to go round up some Greek food in Greektown at some point. That's not going to help the diet either. :)

If it is a clear evening, consider taking Callie to eat up in the Handcock tower. If it is before sunset, look east, you may see the piers at St. Joseph. Like all great men, I was born along the shores of a historic river. South Bend (Notre Dame) is about 35 miles south from where the St. Joseph River drains into Lake Michigan.

I do hope you get in contact with Felicity B., who lives like three blocks east of Chicago in Indiana. Also, ex-girlfriend Jana and I *really* liked the famed Giordano's pizza-they have locations all over town, if memory serves.
