Shut Up And Play
Hopes are high that 3-4 defense goes into mothballs (Megan Manfull, Houston Chronicle)
Soon after Dom Capers was fired, a number of Texans said they want to see the 3-4 defensive scheme go with him.
The lobbying began as players cleaned out their lockers at Reliant Stadium soon after Capers' departure was made official Monday morning. Many players didn't seem nearly as concerned with the type of coach the Texans will hire as they are about the scheme that coach will bring with him.
"I do think the scheme played a part in what happened (to Capers)," cornerback Dunta Robinson said. "We've been in a 3-4 defense since Day 1. Sometimes, the players don't always fit the scheme.
"It has to do with you doing something totally different in college, and when you get here, they ask you to play in a system you're not comfortable in. You're supposed to put guys in positions they know how to play."
The NFL isn't college. Your job is to get comfortable with what the coaches come up with.
Besides, the last time I looked, Pittsburgh and New England had managed some success with the 3-4 defense. They wouldn't be bad teams for the pitiful Texans to emulate.
But it's good that Dunta Robinson got his interview for the coaching position out of the way. Now maybe we can get on to some real coaches.

I don't want to jinx it.
I'll preface it with -- I thought the same way about OU-USC last year, and boy did I get a surprise!
Okay, that said....
I'm not picking against Vince Young in any college game for the rest of his career.
I like the Texas defense to slow down USC just a little (I doubt you stop that offense). I like the Texas offense to move the ball against USC's defense, which isn't as good as last year's.
Maybe I'm nuts, but I think Texas has a better chance of winning this game than they've been given, even if it's darn near a home game for USC.
And I'm actually rooting for Texas. If it can't be Oklahoma, then I want the Big 12 to fare well in its bowl games. And even though I give Mack Brown lots of grief here, he's a nice guy and might well have been the head coach of the Sooners if he hadn't wound up at Texas (former offensive coordinator under Switzer). If it can't be the Sooners, I've got no problems with Mack winning it all.

Vince is a winner. The media seems to be underestimating Texas, but I don't think that USC is...they better not be. Texas D needs an Ohio State game here, USC will move the ball but we have to hold them to FGs not TDs. I think Texas will be able to score on USC, too. I heard one good piece talking about the strength of the USC middle three offensive linemen. If the Texas tackles can hold the line of scrimmage, they can limit USC's running game and free up Michael Huff in the secondary. Special teams will be key, too, and I think that Texas has a block in them sometime tonight. Thanks for the good vibes and enjoy the game tonight. I am already looking forward to next years TX-OU game!
