It's Good That Pro Journalists Have Editors and Fact-Checkers
Cheney Names Two to Fill Libby's Positions (Nedra Pickler, AP)
Reid said he is disappointed that Bush and Cheney responded to the indictment by praising Libby _ known around Washington as "Scooter" _ and suggested they should apologize for the leak that revealed the identity of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame.
The indictment did not charge Libby with revealing the identity of a "covert" agent, but why bother reporting the facts when you have Sen. Reid's talking points?

No, the indictment charged him with lying to a grand jury about revealing the name of an undercover CIA operative. I don't see the problem with the article.

The problem is that "covert" and "undercover" have very different meanings under the law that was presumably the justification for the special prosecutor.
It's a big problem. Professional journalists need to do better.

Kevin: A special prosecutor was called in because John Ashcroft had to recuse himself from overseeing the case.
That was the justification; not the type of case it was.

Presumably, there would have been NO CASE had there been no question of whether a law was broken. In this case, the law in question specifically defines "covert."
The Ashcroft recusal is tangential.
I used "justification" in reference to the notion that some law was broken (and to the meaning of "covert" within that law). I wrote what I meant, and I wrote it very carefully that way. On second thought, though, I would have been more precise and more efficient to substitute "inquiry" for "special prosecutor."
Just think how much better it would be here if I had a staff of editors and fact-checkers to improve my style!
