Redesign
I'm sick to death of all the gray here, and am in the process of changing things up a bit.
Here's a preview of where it's headed. Obviously, I've borrowed some from the blogHOUSTON skin structure. Otherwise, it's pretty low on graphics and designed to load quickly. The final version will have RSS feeds (their location won't change) and the ability to create accounts in order to edit comments.
Any thoughts?
Does it look horrid in your browser? Do you hate the colors? What else?
Obviously, it's a work in progress, but I'm ready for a change.

Two thoughts:
1. Too much white space in a strange position in the header. Perhaps if the logo were centered it'd be okay.
2. I don't like the green. It is not friendly to my eyes.

1. Yeah, the white has been a pain, but I can't seem to figure out a good solution to that.
2) The green has been a problem. I've had versions with links in blue (matching the logo) and visited links in red (also matching the logo). Would that help?
I tried blue instead of green on the sidebar headers, but definitely didn't like that.

Kevin: Looks fine in Safari. I actually like the green.

Ha, thanks Steve! It's about half and half on the green to the handful who have seen it so far. It does match the logo, but it REALLY annoys the people it annoys. :)

Looks fine except for the green logo, makes everything else in the logo look all washed out.

Who's Friendly?

I'm a little conflicted, Green has never been a favorite with me, but it seems to work here. Dark Blue would have been my choice I think, but Green ain't bad. The white space issue might be addressed with maybe a textual tagline or something maybe, or maybe a second image (but that would slow the load a bit obviously).

one other thing, according to Evil Dwight, the data indicates that over 60% of people have broadband now. what with DSL being cheaper than AOL, perhaps the load time is becoming less of an issue unless the issue is bandwidth on the server end.

I may flip the color scheme (visited links that are blue change to green, other links and sidebar headers change to blue) and solicit further opinion.
For a long time, I've always tried to keep load times as low as possible (low graphics) and style with CSS, to be friendly to dialup users as well as low-bandwidth devices like pdas and phones. Those old habits die hard, even as technology passes me by. Very conservative, eh? :)

I just wish you'd publish a full RSS feed.

Scott: I thought once upon a time, you were an RSS hater?
Anyway, the partial feeds are here to say. Having to read the place as I designed it along with the comments is the price of my otherwise free content.
It's really not that much of a price to charge, in my view, but if it's too much for folks, that's fine. I believe in utility theory. :)

Oooo, look at Mr. Artistic!

Well, it wasn't the esthetics so much as the "stuff" I was referring to -- I want readers who are going to click on the occasional furl link I've posted, or on an occasional syndicated link from blogHOUSTON, or leave a comment.
You don't encourage those things by letting people avoid your site with a feedreader.
