RR at MD
Randy Rogers played the Mucky Duck tonight.
He didn't have the full band, just his fiddle player.
It was mostly an enjoyable night. Randy's a really talented singer-songwriter, as I've been posting here for a long long time.
Unfortunately, the fact that so many of the people who pay to see a Duck-quality show (I won't call them fans) and then choose to talk loudly over it is really annoying.
Scott Miller's up next on Thursday. He usually draws better fans to his shows at the Duck.

That's one of the reasons I avoid the Duck at all costs. It feels like a lot of people go to the duck because that's were "good bands" play and they want to be seen going to the good bands. They don't really listen to the music they are there because they are "hip".
It's a frustrating thing for people like me who want to listen to the band and not have to pay 6 bucks or more for a beer to drink while I'm forced to listen to yuppies talking instead.
When I could afford gas I'd go to Austin and see that band the next night rather than deal with the Duck's clientele.

It's disappointing. I wish the Duck staff would get as serious about minimizing talking as they are minimizing flash photography. If you want to have a nice listening room, it seems to me that you ought to encourage people to LISTEN.
I will say that Scott Miller's fans have tended to be respectful of the music when I've seen him there. I hope that's still the case Thursday.

I don't use a flash when shooting bands, so I wonder if the Duck would get upset with me shooting there. Though I don't really know Scott Miller's stuff so I won't be finding out this week most likely. Besides I may be New Orleans then.
On a side note the only time I can think of that the you could hear a pin drop during a performance was a Shoulders show a couple years ago. They came out for the second set and did Beckoning Bells acoustic and it was so incredible even the yuppies shut up. I had shivers up my arm from that.

I had a similar experience at the Duck the last time I saw Ruthie Foster. I paid $15 to hear some giggling girls talk over one of my favorite singers.
I missed last night's show because I waited too late to get the ticket and they were sold out by the time I went to get the ticket on Monday.

Honestly, I'm not a violent person (because I'm a girl, silly!), but when I hear people talking over a band, I want to punch them. One of these days, I just might. It's getting to be a big problem for me.

I really wish the Duck would push the "listening room" angle harder. I know bar owners worry about offending patrons, but they've already banned smoking there (good!). I can't see how courteously encouraging obnoxiously loud fans to tone it down would upset the large number of good music fans who frequent the place.
Here's hoping we don't have the same problem with Scott Miller tonight.
