Robert C. Byrd College Baseball Coach Of The Year

It looks like Sooner baseball coach Larry Cochell has probably coached his last game:

Oklahoma baseball coach Larry Cochell was indefinitely suspended from the bench Friday for racially insensitive remarks made in two off-camera interviews with ESPN’s Gary Thorne and Kyle Peterson before Tuesday night’s OU-Wichita State game.

According to ESPN, the Sooners coach told Thorne, “There’s no n***** in him,” in reference to freshman Joe Dunigan, an African-American.

In a separate discussion about Dunigan with Peterson, Cochell reportedly said, “There are honkies and white people and there are n****** and black people. Dunigan is a good black kid.”

You'd think the guy was a Democrat senior statesman in the U.S. Senate or something, eh?

Except unlike the former Klansman, he will lose his job.

And honestly, it's not that tough a decision for Sooner AD Joe Castiglione. He's got Sunny Golloway on the staff already, and some folks think it's well past due that Golloway take over the program anyway.

(05-02-2005 Update) Cochell "resigned" on Sunday, ending a successful coaching career on a really down note. If only he were a Democrat U.S. Senator, it never would have come to that.

Now now, Kevin. Both parties have some skeletons in the closet on that one. Byrd is nothing to be proud of from a Democratic perspective, but there are some of similar ilk amongst the GOP, no?

Byrd has his job.

Cochell doesn't.

That was my point. I don't recall mentioning the GOP.

I should add that the decision might have been harder for Castiglione/Boren if it were Stoops intead of Cochell.

Cochell's been on a slide since winning the NC at OU nearly a decade ago. His former assistant Golloway was brought in to help revive the program, and some say to take the reins in short order. Lo and behold, he's "interim" coach now. Easy decision for Castiglione. And the right one.

Fair enough. Don't know what motivated me to post that comment. Mondays.

I was a little terse earlier.

I just continue to be amazed by that "white n*****" comment Byrd made, with hardly any repercussions from his own party or from anyone else. No doubt, unacceptable racism is not a partisan matter, and I hope nobody reads me as suggesting it is. But Byrd seems to have gotten a pass that I'm not willing to give him, or a Republican, or a Libertarian, or a Green, or even a Stoops. Ya know?

Cochell's behavior was stunning to me as well. This didn't seem like a "slip." It just seems like a word he used from time to time. No big deal (in his view). That part was like a slap across the face, because it's just so far removed from how people I know think.

Agreed all the way 'round. I am not a fan of Robert Byrd. Or Democrats, for that matter.

Or Sooners' baseball. ;-)
