Bloathorn?
Chron tech guru Dwight Silverman has gone off to be briefed by Microsoft on Longhorn, the next version of Windows.
He's been blogging about the new OS on his techblog.
From the sounds of things, Microsoft is going to give us all sorts of pretty new stuff and all sorts of new bloat -- and, of course, the bloatware is going to require plenty of horsepower to run.
Now, maybe it's going to be worth having. Maybe Microsoft will start to get security right. That would be nice. But it has the sound of bloatware. And I can't help but think that bloated software from Microsoft is not going to be any more secure. We'll see, I guess.
As an aside, I've decided to order an iBook to use as a portable/travel machine. I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but it's going to happen, and soon. I'm looking forward to playing with that OS. And who knows, by the time the Microsoft Bloathorn OS is released, I might well be a committed OS X user.
Dwight, on the other hand, didn't find his Mac Mini experience compelling enough to win him over, and suggests other committed Windows users might have the same problem.

I use some pretty math intensive software in my biz (finite element analysis and 3d modeling of very long, thin walled structures that take a LOT of memory and computing horsepower to run) Microsoft has released winXP64, 64 bit CPU's have been out for almost a year. guess when my FEA and 3D modeling program will support them? 2007 or 2008 (they haven't decided)at the soonest! Dual processor systems (and now dual core processors, two cpu's on the same die, no waiting on the bus!) have been out for years. guess when they will be supported. can you say never? Or at least not for the forseeable future. GRRRRR!

Kevin, don't let my experience deter you from getting an iBook. Actually, if I were going to buy a notebook computer, I'd probably get a Mac -- but I would not want to use that as my SOLE operating system.
