Repercussions of a Sixth-Year Senior at QB
Oklahoma has announced that backup quarterback Paul Thompson will redshirt this season.
They are quick to point out, however, that he would almost certainly come out of redshirt if Jason White went down with a serious injury.
I know the OU coaches surely view it as a luxury having Paul Thompson redshirt on a team that also has talented quarterbacks Tommy Grady and Rhett Bomar waiting in the wings, but I don't know that I like it.
I happen to think that Jason White shouldn't have applied for this "extra" season. Yes, technically he's entitled because of his injuries, and it was surely up to him to appeal to the NCAA. But I've always thought it a little ridiculous to see references to fifth-year seniors in college football. In my mind, there should not be sixth-year seniors of any sort.
And I say that realizing that Jason White gives that team its best shot at competing for Big 12 and National Championships this year, and I'll be cheering him on when the season starts for them tomorrow. But I wouldn't have been disappointed if he had moved on after winning his Heisman Trophy, and given the other guys who have paid their dues their shot.
