Randy Rogers
I started following Randy Rogers about two years ago, on the advice of the producer of his first studio album, Dead End Angel Scott Melott.
The first time I saw him was outside Reliant for a Texans pre-game event. Callie and I were two of the five people in the audience that day. Still, we were impressed.
We've seen a bunch of Randy Rogers Band shows since then, and seen the band change quite a bit. But we've never caught a Randy Rogers acoustic gig.
Last night we did, and it was a real treat. Randy's a fine songwriter and he has a great voice. Those qualities sometimes get lost with the band blasting away behind him in the typical Firehouse-style rowdy Texas roadhouse. So it was nice to hear Randy belting 'em out at the Mucky Duck last night, strumming his quitar, with fiddle player Brady Black in the background. I can't wait for 'em to do it again, although it may not happen for a while with the release of the new Radney Foster-produced CD right around the corner.
I've gotten where I don't much enjoy shows at the Mucky Duck these days, because the venue is so darn cramped. It's often like a 3-hour flight on Southwest, except the Mucky Duck has more than peanuts.
That said, the intimacy of the venue can really complement the right performer. That surely was the case last night. It didn't hurt to be surrounded by a bunch of good friends either.
