Jon Matthews, Sex Offender
Former conservative talk radio personality Jon Matthews joined the ranks of registered sex offenders today:
Former radio host Jon Matthews is now officially a convicted sex offender. He was formally sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to exposing himself to an 11-year-old girl.Matthews received seven years probation, deferred adjudication for pleading guilty to the charge of indecency with a child by exposure. Matthews said little in court Monday, accepting the terms of the deal.
For seven years, the former radio talk show host must have no contact with the victim, stay at least 1,000 feet away from her home and anywhere children gather. He must register as a sex offender and attend sex offender counseling. He must also attend alcoholics anonymous. The judge said Matthews has a drinking problem and ordered him not to use alcohol.
I'm with Chris Elam on this one:
I am not one to withhold judgment on this case. You don't just "accidentally" expose yourself to a child in your home as Matthews has claimed. Jon Matthews made his living by criticizing people, by attacking liberals and conservatives alike, and by giving his unreserved judgment and opinion on every topic and story under the sun. Now, its our turn to do it to him.
Since, so far, there is no talk of money going to this little girl's family, I am much more inclined to be convinced of the veracity of their story.
Even if he somehow exposed himself because alcohol was involved, that doesn't really matter. It's not something that should happen "accidentally." The Kevster's put away bottles of wine and bottles of Shiner and bottles of vodka, and still never managed to open the door, invite little girls in to play, and fall out of his clothes. It's just not something that should happen.
As Chris writes, the fact that money seems not to have been involved, coupled with the fact that he pleaded guilty (instead of fighting a charge that guarantees he's persona non grata to conservatives, who helped him make a nice living, for the rest of his life), suggests to me that guy has some major problems. What happened was bad enough, but it could have been much worse. Thank goodness it wasn't.
(08-03-2004 Update) The Comical reports that Matthews took a few shots at the judicial proceedings afterwards. Nice. Very nice.

I like the reference to yourself in the 3rd person as "The Kevster." Sounds like a WWE wrestler.

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think that criminal charges can be dropped against someone as a result of a financial settlement with an alleged victim. Not that it can't happen - I seem to recall an outcry a few years back when Michael Jackson bought off the family of a kid he was supposed to have molested. It's just not supposed to happen.

Well, I think on a case like this, if a victim or her family had simply refused to cooperate, the DA would have little choice but to drop the proceedings. I think it's true that the family delayed for a time before going forward with this. If there had been stories of the family approaching Matthews for money, then I might be more dubious about the events. But there are no indications that happened, and it's certainly understandable that the family would want to take their time and think through whether to put the little girl through the ordeal.

He plead guilty to a felony. Not a deal to a lessor charge. He's guity. The SOB. I for one can't throw the first stone but damn him for what he did and did to our trust.

For years and years Jon "The King" Matthews has been passing judgement and spreading lies about others.
And during this time "The King" has been wagging his weenie at little girls.
I hope The King lives a very long time.He has disgraced his family and who knows what damage this slimeball has done to this little girl.
After The King lives out his long and wretched life my he spent eternity fellating Satan

I was shocked when I heard about this and didn't believe it at first. I agreed with Mr. Mathews on most of his comments (I am a conservative) and I understand that everyone can make a mistake. This was a doozy and he's paying for it. I hope the little girl is OK; and I wonder what Mr. Mathews is doing now? I remember he had just got a new puppy and was talking about it a day or so before the news broke.
While I think that what he did was vile, I also don't think the whole man should be devalued by this one act. He has a lot of insight and wasn't afraid to speak up and I respect him for that.

Jon Mathews is a big dissapointment. He could talk the talk, but he couldn't walk the walk. (He is, BTW, guilty as hell). He is a a disgrace to himself and his former family and should also be excommunicated from the United States Marines. For Shame!
