Sore Losers
I was actually going to refrain from laughter over the Shorthorns' loss in the College World Series over the weekend.
But then I read this:
"It appeared by the way we were playing that we were the best team and would win this tournament, which makes it even harder for the players to understand or accept," Texas coach Augie Garrido said. "We did our best. They did better."
Texas chose not to return to the field for the second-place trophy presentation while Garrido talked with the team in the locker room. NCAA officials made two requests for the Longhorns to return to the field.
What a bunch of sore losers.
Nice job, Augie. I'm glad your old team beat your arse.
I do miss college baseball season, though.

As a UT alum, I am embarrassed by the reaction of the team and coach. I seriously think the UT president should reprimand the coach & team. What are all the Lil' Leaguers supposed to make of this, Kevin?

Alex: I was going to be happy for Texas college baseball that one of our teams did well, until this. For me, that's a lot.
Banjo: What can ya do? Augie Garrido has been one hell of a coach over his career, but that wasn't one of his finer moments.
Sween308: I know, but I made my peace with that aspect of the college game a long time ago. Once you do, it's a great game. I'll take Cougar Field over Minute Maid anytime.

Why don't they use toned down aluminum bats? I believe I remember reading that they did tone them down a few years ago. I know that you will never be able able to duplicate certain things like shattering bats, but surely they could get the bat companies to tone the bats down even more, or I am crazy (for the purposes of this discussion only ;))?

In today's Houston paper, Justice makes an observation. "All that saves Garrido is the fact he has represented the university well and runs what appears to be a clean program."
"Appears" being the operative word, this baseball team is similar to the OU Jerry Parks era.
UT is on probation for committing Major NCAA Violations in 2002. One such more violation and UT baseball is eligible for the death Penalty. You consider that CLEAN? How many other D1 Baseball teams have received a major infraction over the last 5 years?

They had two players arrested during the Big 12 Tournament this year.
They were again cited for NCAA violations this year for illegal practices.
Tim Moss was arrested of assault, battery and evading arrest during the 2002 season. He wasn’t suspended for a single game by Auggie.
Omar Quintenilla was forced to sit out 6 weeks by the NCAA for receiving illegal airline tickets in 2002.
Then this year Auggie breaks a 25 year tradition and refuses to make an appearance at the trophy presentation and he also refuses to allow reporters into the Locker room after they loss. Not allowing reporters in the locker room is another NCAA violation.
This is more arrests, sanctions and rule breaking than every D1 baseball program, in the entire state of Texas, COMBINED, over the last 3 years. Yet it appears that they runs a “clean program?”

Personally I like UT baseball, my 7yr old star has talked about playing at UT since he could speak; I was however not disappointed when they were swept, it gave me the opportunity to talk with my son about: heart, determination, the will to win, etc; and, when they didn't come out for the ceremony, we talked about Sportsmanship, Class, etc.

Now I understand, KIV. Auggie and the team were using reverse psychology to show youngsters like your son what NOT to do after losing. I didn't pick up on that. Yea Horns!
