Lovett

I know some of the less conservative readers here aren't necessarily big fans of all that we're doing over at Chronically Biased.

That's fine.

But even if you don't like our political or media-crit stuff, I'd encourage you to go over and read Dan Lovett's articles. Lovett's a Houstonian and Texas Hall of Fame broadcaster, and he's just been cranking out some fascinating copy for us, and cranking it out so fast that I can't keep up (I'm sitting on a few articles right now).

We're having some fun over at Chronically Biased, but I must say that it's just been an amazing honor to edit and post Dan Lovett's copy. I'm like a kid in the candy store, getting first crack at this stuff.

Go have a peek at what's posted so far if you're so inclined.

Lovett's article on weathermen was hilarious. I'll be sure to check out more of us stuff over there soon.

I just read this post, was intrigued, and clicked over to check it out. In my haste, I clicked the wrong link and went to the main page. I started to scroll down and came across this:

My View: Planned Parenthood
By Owen Courreges

It caught my eye because I've actually brought up Sanger's interesting past with a number of my liberal friends. It's a cheap way to elicit a stammer or two. But something about the piece really bothered me. In short, it seemed to be all dots and no connect, to paraphrase a Texas put-down.

The argument seems to be:
Margaret Sanger was a eugenicist.
Margaret Sanger founded Planned Parenthood.
The Houston Chronicle has given money to Planned Parenthood.
The Houston Chronicle is disgusting.

I'm no logician, but... I'm guessing that doesn't hold up to rigorous analysis. It just seems sloppy to me. To paraphrase my favorite Houston blogger: Does this blog have an editor?

p.s. Speaking of editing, how about this sentence: "Give what they support and they have supported, I find this very disappointing."

Huh?

This isn't really the place for a comment about Owen's post on a wholly separate blog that I've only mentioned twice since its inception, is it? In a comment to a post about Dan Lovett, a notable Houston sports broadcasting figure who is not at all a controversial political writer?

Owen IS an editor over there, yes. So wouldn't it be appropriate to leave Owen a comment inline, or an email, or even a general email that we can discuss, in the appropriate forum?

I don't mind criticism. If we're going to dish it out, we certainly need to be able to take it. I'm cool with that. But this isn't the place for us to discuss Owen's posts.

Point taken.

Damn.

When I first saw the page, I thought you were going to write something about Lyle.

Meh.

Sorry, Kevin, I like both of your blogs very much, but I cannot get very excited either about CB or Dan Lovett. It has a very different tone from your personal blogging (naturally, since it is not your blog).

Nevertheless, CB seems to have many fans, so kudos to you and yours, and a belated Happy Birthday.

TP: No need to be sorry. That's one reason I discouraged any spillover of anything substantive at CB here. The readers here are a much more varied lot, and I get that.

On Lovett, though, I do think we've got a guy producing the sort of copy that is really going to appeal to older Houstonians and sports fans. He's just covered everything it seems. The Chron ought to be getting Herskowitz -- the best writer on their staff -- to reminisce in a similar fashion, at least once a week, but instead it's more fun to humiliate him publicly and then stick him to covering boring contemporary stuff that any recent j-school grad could be chasing. It's sad.

That's not to say everyone should love Herskowitz either, but at least the folks over there could take advantage of the guy's considerable strengths. Oh well.

I thought Herskowitz wasn't your cup o' tea.

I'm not the biggest fan of his style, no. But I do recognize him as a good writer (and an accomplished writer), and a guy who has appeal to an older group of Houstonians. It just seems like a shame that they don't take full advantage of him.

How else to put it -- even though he doesn't appeal to me personally as a reader, I'd jump all over the opportunity if I had the chance as editor to get him to reminisce. That little "plagiarism" incident would never have occurred, because it would be his job to go back to the vaults, and crank out his memories.

When Lovett was in SF, he did the show after MNFootball..and you talk about a fish out of water!! This yard idiot was so pathetic talking sports...he was more like "oh golly" or "oh gee whiz" and never asked a question that ever sounded prepared or indicated he had any idea what he was talking about. Glad some other city was stupid enough to take him.
