The Conservative Debate Over Houston Revenues

Ron Nissimov pens an article on two competing ballot initiatives that will appear on municipal ballots this fall. Both proposals aim to control the growth of municipal government by limiting revenues. One proposal is backed by Mayor White as an alternative to a citizen initiative that is more comprehensive. Local conservatives have backed both proposals, with Councilman Mark Ellis helping author the Mayor's proposal (but supporting both) and Paul "Tax Man" Bettencourt and Councilman Michael Berry supporting the citizen initiative.

There's been little substantive coverage of this issue, and it has yet to be addressed on Chronically Biased despite their relatively close affiliation with Paul Bettencourt.

One part of Nissimov's coverage merits criticism:

But political analysts also suggested that White offered Proposition 1 because he plans to run for higher office and wants to bolster his credentials as a fiscally responsible, centrist Democrat.

"He certainly is an ambitious fellow, and I expect he wants the option of running for governor or senator," said University of Houston political scientist Richard Murray.

Now that Professor Murray has come out of the closet as a partisan Democrat, he needs to be identified as such in articles. He may still be capable of rendering objective political analysis, but readers should be told more about his background.
