Hi, I’m Kevin Whited, your friendly proprietor at PubliusTX.net.
I was born in Texas, grew up in Oklahoma, spent some time in Springfield MO doing a B.S. in Political Science and an M.S. in Defense and Strategic Studies, and moved to Houston for graduate school in 1995.
I completed my Ph.D. graduate work and exams in political science at the University of Houston in the fall of 1997 — coincidentally when I went to work for a big multinational firm doing country risk analysis for the oil and gas industry. I successfully defended my doctoral dissertation (“Progressive Constitutionalism and the Transformation of the Police Power”) in 2003 (it can take a while when you are working full time AND your dissertation director experiences a significant health event).
I’ve been into online self-publishing since it was known as journaling rather than blogging, which is quite a while! I’ve also had a hand in starting or contributing to some other blogs: 8 More Miles (a band fan site), Reductio Ad Absurdum (politics/media/culture/books blog). Chronically Biased (media watchblog), blogHOUSTON (focusing on Houston politics and media, and most recently, Texas Iconoclast (focusing on Texas politics, media, and culture).
Other hobbies/interests/obsessions include: Travel (the biggie in recent years), Biking (more recently), Hiking (travel has mostly displaced my backpacking these days, but I do still enjoy a trail now and again), Wine (definitely natural, preferably French), Grilling (meat, fire, hmm!), Technology, Reading (Kindle!), and Politics (obviously).
I’ve lived in various parts of the great city of Houston (West Houston, Montrose, Upper Kirby, Midtown), but finally purchased a place in Tanglewilde in 2009 (it snowed on Moving Day. In Houston. Go figure). I’m a big fan of this highly livable city, and get annoyed at people with “world-class” envy who want to trinketize and trivialize the place in the hopes that tourists and East/West-Coasters will finally “validate” the city. Let Houston be Houston!
